* Make every single page on your site accessible via a text-based link as the Googlebot only speaks text.
* Keep the number of links on a given page less than 100.
* Do not use URLs with query strings.
. Google offers the allintitle syntax, which lets users search only text that appears in a page title. Give every single page on the site a complete and meaningful title.
* Avoid frames.
* Make sure that the title and alt tag attributes exist and are complete and meaningful in each page's markup.

* Use meaningful text inside your tags so the Googlebot can associate that text with that href link. Meaning, if I am going to link my pictures from the war protest, I should say "Take a look at my photos from the war protest" instead of "My war protest pictures are here."
* Include a tag in your page header to summarize your site.
* Place more important content higher in the markup than less important content in a page.

Disable Clicks on Uploaded Images in Blogger Blog

By uploading all images uploaded to blogging posts are clickable and holds a "href" tag in the source so that if someone clicks on them, they open in a new window making the actual post disappear and one would have to click "back" button in the browser to go back to the original posts.

If you want to stop the images opening in a new windows and disable mouse click on them, then all you need to do is to simply remove the href="" tag from the image's source.

To do this, go to "Edit HTML" in the post editor, and find the uploaded image's source and remove the href="..." tag from there. Simple!

Remove href="..." from all images in the post.

Now after publishing when you view your post, you'll notice that all your images are unclickable and a simple arrow will appear if you hover your mouse over.

There’s a new kid in monetizing town and his name is Pay Per Play. I’m not sure whether to befriend him or warn the neighbors yet, so I’ll just tell you what I know and let you decide. In a nutshell, the deal is this: You drop some code on your site. When a visitor hits your site a 5 second audio ad is played and you get paid. The visitor doesn’t have to click anything or by anything, you get paid every time the audio is played.
The sample ads sound harmless, and at 5 sec they’re very short basic brand advertising. The site says they will cater ads to the content of your site, and does not allow adult content ads at all.

Currently, Pay Per Play is in beta collecting publisher data and plans to launch on Feb 1. I have no idea what they will pay, but they claim it will be weekly and PayPal is an option. If you’re interested, check them out at Pay Per Play.

The system seems to have been in beta test for several years now, perhaps explaining why Yahoo as a company is suffering. They are either extremely selective or are simply not accepting new publishers and advertisers, either way they won't even bother to get back to you to let you know this and most applicants won't even receive a reply saying their application has been rejected. These days the importance of the meta description is less and less important. The meta description was originally and important factor for a higher position in search engines ranking. On that time search engines weren`t so "wise", and the meta descriptions where full of spammy keywords.

Now search engines are more wiser and spamming your meta description might can bring to get penalized or even banned. It`s not easy to recover your blog from a ban. Be aware, if you decide to use meta descriptions don`t make them look spammy and don`t stuff the them whit lots of keywords.

Today I'm Gonna Share A Talk With You That is About Are You Disclosing Your Affiliate Links?

As an Australian I’m not directly impacted by the FTC and its regulations so I’ve not really had to change my own approach to disclosure – but I’d be interested to hear a bit of discussion on the topic – particularly around these questions:

1.Do you disclose affiliate links on your blog in some way?
2.If so – how do you do it (every time you use one, in the bottom of posts, site wide disclosures…. something else)?
3.if so – has the FTC regulations impacted what you do?
My personal approach for the last couple of years has been to have a sitewide disclosure rather than a per post one (although here on ProBlogger I have been noting affiliate links in posts more often lately).

Well, it will be great as your page will take less time to load and you will get another page view from your reader if they find your Post title attractive. This post is for blogspot users who want to attach a signature in their Blogger Blogs. After Receiving an e-mail from one of my blog reader i have posted this article which will guide you through and let you know that How you can add Signature in Blogger like the image given here.

Before Adding the signature you must have an image of your signature of any size, but i suggest you to use small signature image. you can use Microsoft Excel or Word to Create a signature image and save it as .jpg or .png, after having an image you need to upload it to your server. I will suggest you to upload it into one of your blog post and once you have uploaded the image you can go into your post's EDIT HTML section and copy the ='url_of_your_signature_image' style='border:0px;'/> Code. Once you have copied that code you can delete that code but copy the code in some notepad for further use.

If you want to protect your Blogger blog from spam comments. Enable comment moderation so you can accept or reject each comment individually.

Follow this steps.

1.Sign in to your Blogger account.

2.Go to the settings tab. Click the link for comment settings.

3.Under "Who Can Comment?" select anyone. You'll protect yourself from spam with steps further down the page.

4.Scroll down the page and select "Enable Comment Moderation." You must give the email address you want the comments to come to for moderation.

5.You can further prevent spam by selecting "Show Word Verification for Comments." This uses CAPTCHA to make the user type random letters from an image into a form before the comment is sent to you for moderation.

6.The final setting is "Comment Notification Address." If you select this, you will receive an email when a comment is published. This isn't necessary to select, since you receive each comment in an email to moderate before it's published.

7.In the comment moderation email you receive, you have a link to either publish, reject, or go to the comment moderation page for your blog. The focus was content for beginners (this was expanded later).

Quality of content was paramount – but so too was the idea of increasing the ‘quantity’ of content –

I started with 3-4 posts a week but aimed to get it daily after 1 year.

Foundation 2 – Promotion

‘Build it and they Will Come’ is an idea with some truth to it – but in the early days of your blog you also need to actively promote your blog – readers won’t just find it.
Define your potential reader – who are they? What are their needs?
Identify where that type of reader is already gathering online (and offline).
Participate in those sites where your potential reader is gathering – guest posts, building a forum presence, leaving useful comments, networking etc.

Foundation 3 – Community

People don’t just come online for information – they increasingly are coming online to find ‘belonging’
Readers want to participate, interact, join and relate – give them opportunity to do so
On dPS starting a forum was one way I did this however community was something I went out of my way to build on the blog itself.
Use polls, start discussions, run debates, ask questions, highlight readers work, invite people to promote themselves on your blog, link to your readers
When you build community you build an army of evangelists for your blog, create social proof and open many doors for growth and strengthening of your site

Foundation 4 – Capture Contacts

Most people who visit your site will never return naturally – even if they like your site

RSS is not always King – on dPS email subscription makes up over 75% of all subscribers

1. Never click your own adsense ads or get them clicked for whatever reason. You know this one very well. This is a surefire way to close you Adsense account. Never tell your office associates or friends to click on them. Keep a check if your family or children are busy increasing your income by clicking your ads and indirectly trying to stop your income. Dont even think of offering incentives for clicks, using automated clicking tools, or other deceptive software. Adsense is very smart to detect fraudulent clicks. Check the ads which appear on your pages by the Google Preview tool if required.

2. Never change the Adsense code. There are enough means of adsense optimization & customizations available to change the colour, background or border to suit your needs. Do whatever you want to do outside the code, never fiddle within the ad or the search code. They know it when you do. The search code has more limitations to colour and placement, but you should adhere to the rules. The code may stop working and violates the TOS.

3. Do not place more than 3 ad units and 3 ad links or 2 adsense search boxes on any web page. Anyway, ads will not appear in those units even if you place more ad units. But this is the limit they set, so it is better to stick to it.

4. Do not run competitive contextual text ad or search services on the same site which offer Google Adsense competition in their field. Never try to create link structures resembling the adsense ads. Never use other competitive search tools on the same pages which have Adsense powered Google search. They do allow affiliate or limited-text links. Update: Google has allowed you to run contextual advertising like Yahoo ads, Chitika etc provided the ads do not resemble Adsense ads.

5. Do not disclose confidential information about your account like the CTR, CPM and income derived via individual ad units or any other confidential information they may reveal to you. However, you may reveal the total money you make as per recent updates to the TOS.

6. Label headings as “sponsored links” or “advertisements” only. Other labels are not allowed. I have seen many sites label ads with other titles. Dont make your site a target in a few seconds gaze.

7. Never launch a New Page for clicked ads by default. Adsense ads should open on the same page. You may be using a base target tag to open all links in a new window or frame by default. Correct it now as they do not want new pages opening from clicked ads.

8. One Account suffices for Multiple websites. You do not need to create 5 accounts for 5 different websites. One account will do. If you live in the fear that if one account is closed down for violation of TOS, believe me they will close all accounts when they find out. You can keep track of clicks by using channels with real time statistics. They will automatically detect the new site and display relevant ads.

9. Place ads only on Content Pages. Advertisers pay only for content based ads. Content drives relevant ads. Although you might manage some clicks from error, login, registration, “thank you” or welcome pages, parking pages or pop ups, it will get you out of the program.

10. Do not mask ad elements. Alteration of colours and border is a facility to blend or contrast ads as per your site requirements. I have seen many sites where the url part is of the same colour as the background. While blending the ad with your site is a good idea, hiding relevant components of the ads is not allowed. Also do not block the visibility of ads by overlapping images, pop ups, tables etc.

11. Do not send your ads by email. Html formatted emails look good and allow placement of these javascript ads. But it is not allowed as per TOS. You do not want impressions registering on their logs from any email even once. They are watching!

12. Keep track of your content. So Adsense is not allowed on several non content pages. But it is also not allowed on several content pages too. Do not add it on web pages with MP3, Video, News Groups, and Image Results. Also exclude any pornographic, hate-related, violent, or illegal content.

13. Do not alter the results after ad clicks or searches – Ensure you are not in any way altering the site which the user reaches to after clicking the ads. Do not frame, minimize, remove, redirect or otherwise inhibit the full and complete display of any Advertiser Page or Search Results Page after the user clicks on any Ad or Search results.

14. Avoid excessive advertising and keyword stuffing – Although the definition of ‘excessive’ is a gray area and is subject to discretion, yet Google adsense with correct placement, focused content and high traffic will get you much more income than other programs, so excessive advertising is not required. Keyword stuffing does target better focused ads, but overdoing it is not required.

15. Ensure you Language is Supported – Adsense supports “Chinese (simplified), Japanese, Danish, Korean, Dutch, Norwegian, English, Polish, Finnish, Portuguese, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Hungarian, Swedish, Italian and Turkish”. In addition, AdSense for search is available in Czech, Slovak, and Traditional Chinese. If your web pages language is not supported, do not use the code on such pages.

16. Maximum 2 referral button per product per page – With the launch of the google adsense referral program, you are allowed to put only 2 referral buttons for adsense referral, adwords referral, Google pack and Firefox with google toolbar referral. Update: This feature is closing Aug 2008.

17. Do not specify Google ads as your alternate ads. – Several services like Chitika eminimalls allow you to place alternate urls, when a targeted paying ad cannot be displayed. This involved creating an simple html page and putting the ad to be displayed instead. Even Adsense allows an alternate url feature instead of displaying public service ads. But never use Adsense ads as alternate urls.

18. Do not confuse with adjacent images – It was a common policy to increase CTR by placing same number of images as the number of text ads, which falsely gave the impression that the text ads represented an explanation to these images. Inserting a small space or a line between the images and ads is not allowed. Make sure that the ads and images are not arranged in a way that could easily mislead or confuse your visitors. More.

Blogger Calendar Update

An update for the Blogger Archive Calendar is up and out. If you haven't installed it yet, but are interested than just jump over there and follow the instructions as the updates are included.

If you are one of the people in a +UTC timezone that has been affected over the last week by the blogspot encoding bug that was wreaking havoc with the calendar, then you may want to install the update, as it bypasses that error and should now work in your correct timezone (as it did initially). Quick notes if you are updating. You only need to recopy / paste the script section from Step #2 of the setup. You don't have to redo the widget portion from step #1, nor will any styling changes you made be changed. They will work with the new version. Just the script portion needs to be reinstalled. If you have modified any of the script variables (like loading image, day names etc) then you'll have to re input those. But you will not have to input your timezone! The new version 'auto-detects' and calibrates to the timezone your feed is using, so it's auto-magic now (I sure hope). I've pretty much tested it out as well as I can, and it should work. Of course as always if you run into problems lemme know.

If you have installed the calendar and it was working without incident, then you probably don't need to get the update. The changes aren't really necessary if you haven't been having the +UTC error, and the other change was just for easy of setup really.

Boring stuff on what I changed and why - not really necessary to read

The whole reason I did this change was not to fix the blogspot encoding error. As the scripts were (and still are) correct, it's blogspot that mucked it up and still awaiting them to fix that bit. :-)

Changes were made in order to fix other things I neglected. Like being a landlocked American who doesn't get out much, when I perused through the long list o'timezones to see what everyone uses, I jumped to the wrong conclusion that every UTC timezone was in one hour increments. Wrong. Apparently a few are in :30 minute, even :45 minute increments. I thought I was saving the possibility of users making an error with their timezones by hardcoding the :00 in for everyone. But that left out those few timezones that don't cooperate. That's an easy enough fix, no biggie.

But over the last few weeks as I've looked closer, I've noticed some fairly substantial inconsistencies in what Blogger lists as timezones, and what it actually sets them to. Quick f'rinstance. Blogger lists 3 (count 'em 3) different versions of Mountain Daylight Time (one labeled -08:00UTC, one labeled -07:00UTC and one labeled -06:00UTC). Now I'm no expert, but every source I find on the internet says that Mountain Daylight Time is only and always -06:00UTC. And just because you pick the one labeled -8:00UTC, doesn't mean that's what Blogger sets it to. Found many instances of this across the board. I'm not sure what to think, maybe Blogger is taking into account something I just don't see, but it seems to complicate the matter.

Anyway, because of that I decided to switch to an auto detect of which timezone the feeds are using. I had thought of doing this initially, but thought it was easy enough to find out what you were using by looking at the Blogger settings so considered it unnecessary. As I found out, what you think you may have may not be what you have...err...or something. So to simplify the process went with the auto detection of the timezone. This makes for an additional script call, but it's a very small (about 800 bytes - smaller than a small icon) one so any load time is negligible. So that's the main reason for the update. To include the timezones I had left out, and to incorporate the auto-detect since it's more complicated from the users perspective than it seems at first to get it spot on.

But while I was in there, and doing the auto detect anyway, it allowed me to change around how the archive feeds were called (changed from calling the blogspot feeds which are currently returning errors on properly encoded + signs to the equivalent blogger feeds which are doing it correctly). The main reason I didn't use the blogger.com feeds and used the blogspot feeds are they are supposed to be the same (and usually are) and I need the blogID to work off the blogger.com feeds (another user input step that seemed unnecessary). But since I'm auto getting the timezone, with no additional overhead I can also detect the blogID, so now might as well work off the blogger.com feeds. So that's why it should work for every timezone now as it's the blogspot feeds that are borked encoding wise. At least that's the theory anyway. :-)

I just reread that last paragraph and there is a high probability it's gibberish to anyone but me. But I'm too tired to try and clarify. I think I said I hope it works well now.

Blogger, Feedburner, Sitemaps and Submitting All Your Posts

Blogger users who wanted to submit a sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools have always had some disadvantages. Since we can't publish a real sitemap to the domain we are using we had to settle for only submitting a partial sitemap by using our default site feeds (which only contain the last 25 posts). Add to that confusion when Blogger introduced Feed Redirection (to FeedBurner or others) made things even trickier, as for awhile if you chose the feed redirection option, then you couldn't submit a sitemap. Fortunately Blogger came up with a super secret option (so secret they never bothered to tell anyone) that fixes the problem for submitting a sitemap when feed direction is enabled ( hat tip to Amit for letting their secret out). And in the same step opened up a way to submit all your posts in a sitemap, instead of just the last 25.

So, starting at the beginning. To submit a Blogspot hosted blogs feed as a sitemap to GWT, you have to use the root-level feed that Blogger provides.

If you are using the redirect option on your feed, you can add a query parameter to stop the redirect on your feed in the format of (I'm only giving the filename paths here)

That will keep the feed from redirecting and is now usable as a sitemap at GWT.

Submitting all your posts

Previously the root-level Blogger feeds did not accept any query parameters, but when Blogger added the redirect=false one, they also seemed to open up those feeds to all the known Blogger query parameters. And that's how you can submit more than the standard 25 posts. First off, figure out how many posts you have (you can do this at the Blogger Edit Post page and selecting only published posts, it will tell you how many total you have). Then you can use the max-results and start-index parameters to expand the number of results obtained, and to submit more than one map if needed. Note: Currently Blogger limits the max-results to 500 entries. This has gone up and down a couple of times so it could change. As of right now the upper limit appears to be 500. But 100 was the limit at one time.

I'm going to use the max limit of 100 in my examples, you can use more if that's what you want. So to get the first set of 100 posts the url I'd submit would be

atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=100

Then, if I have more than 100 posts (I currently have 105) I can create another sitemap with the url

/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=101&max-results=100

If you notice, just increase the start-index number by the amount of results you are getting. So the first sitemap started at 1, and returned 100 results, the second sitemap would use the start-index of 101 (100+1). Now that should automatically cover me for the next 95 posts. If I had more than 200 posts, just create another sitemap with the start-index of 201 (you get the idea). GWT will automatically download the sitemaps (usually about once a day) and if I've made a new post it should get added to the mix. Here's a screenshot of my current sitemaps in GWT, which I've been doing this way for almost a month.

Having said all that, two last things. One, I don't really think all of this helps any (if at all). Blogger blogs aren't that difficult to crawl and Google will probably crawl your blog just as well with or without a sitemap of any kind. Two, if you really wanted to create a non-feed sitemap with some sort of sitemap generating tool, then according to this recent post at Google Webmaster Central Blog, you could upload a sitemap for blogspot through another verified site (like maybe googlepages? I haven't really tried it).

Blogger, Robots.txt, Canonical URLs, Feeds - Let's Gain some Synergy

A little rant where I ask Blogger to make a slight change. The story begins...

Several months back, Blogger changed the way they did comments somewhat. Short version is they broke up post pages that receive many comments (200+). This is fine. In doing so, they also had to add some query parameters to comment permalinks so they could work with the new pagination. Again, nothing wrong with that.

But sometimes googlebot gets confused with a page having multiple urls. These are canonical issues. ( Admission - I have trouble both spelling and saying canonical, but I digress). This hit our favorite blog Hacks when I noticed suddenly last December hits from Google had dropped off, to almost nothing. What I found when I started looking into it was it seemed Google was now suddenly grabbing tons of these comment permalink urls and giving them prominence over what should be the real url. Example.

Instead of having this url in the Google index

............./2006/09/code-for-beta-blogger-label-cloud.html
Which is the proper url, which has hundreds of links pointing at it, Google was indexing urls like this instead
......./2006/09/code-for-beta-blogger-label-
cloud.html?showComment=1221076440000
Which is just a link to a particular comment. But since that url doesn't having any links to it (as it shouldn't) it doesn't rise to the top of any searches like the real url would.

In a perfect world, Google usually knows which is the better url, and probably most of the time it does things correctly. But for whatever reason Google was mucking it up the same way on many of my posts that used to get search hits.

I should say here that ultimately I don't give a shit. Hell it took me a month to even notice as I'm not doing a lot of posting. I don't really care too much whether I get hits or not and I figure it will eventually work itself out. But it's a problem with such an easy solution.

Now my good pal, Notorious I.M.P, pointed out to me this recent post from Google Webmaster Central talking about a new feature that allows you to fix (supposedly) canonical issues like this by adding a "hint" to google with a tag. Well that's fine. If'n it works.

If you wanted to try it for Blogger you would add something like this to the head of your template.

I've just tried that so I don't know if it actually works or not, but it outputs things the way the Webmasters Tools blog says to.

But for Blogger, we are really fighting a battle that could have a better solution. Only we users can't do it. It would have to be done at Blogger. A better solutions would be to add a few lines to the robots.txt file to take into account these canonical urls that the comment pagination changed caused. Blogger already blocks urls with "search" in the path which correctly blocks redundant label/search pages. But a few tweaks would help out also. Something along the lines of adding these two lines to the robots.txt

Disallow: /feeds/comments
Disallow: /*?showComment*

Now if I have that right (which I may not) that would 1) Block comments feeds from being indexed. That's where I believe the comment pagination links are being picked up from mainly, and besides comments feeds really don't need to be indexed do they? 2). Would block any urls with ?showComment in them which would block any of the comment permalinks if they got picked up somewhere else.

Or maybe there is a better way of doing it. Or they could do nothing. I'm just ranting.

In appearance, this Blogger "add-on" is similar to the LinkWithin script. Each section is highlighted in a complementary colour when the mouse hovers over it, and the entire section is clickable, leading to the URL of the "related post" displayed.

Unlike the LinkWithin script, this add-on links directly to the post page it references, and relies on Blogger's label feeds to display posts of true relevance to the post on which it appears.

New bloggers are in confusion to apply DoFollow or NoFollow for their Sites. As we all know, blogs are said to be DoFollow when it does not contain the NoFollow attribution which tell the search engines not to follow the outbound link and give any credits to it.
